What is the Glivac 400 mg Tablet ?

What is Glivac 400 mg Tablet?

Glivac 400 mg Tablet is an oral anticancer medicine with the active ingredient Imatinib. It works by inhibiting signals important for cell division, a process that is accelerated in cancer cells. Glivac 400 mg Tablet is used in the treatment of certain types of tumors and lymphoma, and can effectively work as a long-term medication.

What are the Uses of Glivac 400 mg Tablet ?

Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML)

CML is caused by a mutation in the Philadelphia chromosome, which is responsible for the division of white blood cells. Glivac 400 mg Tablet is used as a primary therapy for this indication. It delays the disease progression and achieves normal blood counts.

Philadelphia chromosome–positive Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (Ph + ALL)

Similar to CML, this indication is also caused by the Philadelphia chromosome mutation and is caused by rapid cell division of immature lymphocytes in the bone marrow, leading to aggressive progression. Glivac 400 mg Tablet is typically given in combination with chemotherapy and helps improve survival rates.

Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST)

As the name suggests, GIST arises from the gastrointestinal tract, generally from the stomach or intestines. For this indication, Glivac 400 mg Tablet is generally paired with chemotherapy. It can also be used as an adjuvant therapy after surgery.

Myelodysplastic/Myeloproliferative Diseases (MDS/MPD)

This syndrome is a group of diseases that arise due to excessive or abnormal cell production from the bone marrow. Glivac 400 mg Tablet is administered only to a selected set of patients with a specific clinical profile. It helps control the disease progression and stabilizes abnormal blood counts.

Hypereosinophilic Syndrome (HES) / Chronic Eosinophilic Leukemia (CEL)

This is a rare disorder characterized by high eosinophil counts and causes organ damage. Glivac 400 mg Tablet is given only to patients with certain variants of this disorder and helps restore the eosinophil counts.

Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP)

This is a rare, slow-growing form of skin cancer, but it has a low chance of spreading. Glivac 400 mg Tablet is used when DFSP presents as a recurrent or metastatic disease.

Systemic Mastocytosis (selected cases)

This disease occurs due to the abnormal proliferation of mast cells in the tissues. Only a specific subtype of this disease is treated using Glivac 400 mg Tablet, and it helps control the disease and reduce its severity.

How does Glivac 400 mg Tablet Work?

Glivac 400 mg Tablet (Imatinib) is an oral medication that is generally used for the treatment of specific types of leukemias and solid tumors. Glivac 400 mg Tablet is commonly prescribed as it can change the prognosis of specific cancers, particularly chronic forms of the disease, from being rapidly fatal to long-term diseases that can be managed.

The predominant types of cancers treated with Glivac (CML) are caused by the excessive proliferation of malignant cells in the bone marrow or an organ’s tissues. When many abnormal cells develop and proliferate, there is a simultaneous decrease in the number of normal cells, which leads to the development of anemia, an increased risk for infections, and enlarged organs. Unlike non-cancerous (normal) cells, cancerous (malignant) cells remain extra sensitive to “growth signals.” This results in abnormal cell proliferation that would otherwise not occur.

Glivac 400 mg Tablet works by blocking these abnormal growth signals. It selectively inhibits specific enzymes (tyrosine kinases) responsible for driving cancer cell proliferation. By doing so, Glivac 400 mg Tablet slows down or stops the multiplication of abnormal cells, allowing normal cells to recover. Over time, this leads to normal blood counts, reduction in tumor burden, and control of disease progression.

Clinically, the key effect is disease control rather than immediate cure, with sustained therapy helping maintain remission and prevent relapse.
