Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare types of cancers that grow in the digestive system, and most commonly grow in the stomach and/or small intestine. GISTs are typically treated with standard-of-care drugs, including imatinib and sunitinib (targeted therapies). However, many patients with GISTs develop resistance to one or both of these treatments over time. Regonat 40 tablet (Regorafenib) is a type of oral medication categorized under the class of multi-kinase inhibitors. It is used to treat cancers in humans by blocking the action of many different proteins (protein kinases) involved in the growth of tumor cells and the creation of new blood vessels that supply oxygen and nutrients for the tumor to continue growing.
Regonat 40 tablet attaches to and blocks protein kinases involved in tumor angiogenesis (the creation of new blood vessels around a tumor), specifically the 3 main types of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptors (VEGF-R1, VEGF-R2, and VEGF-R3). As a result, this drug reduces the formation of new blood vessels around a tumor and thus "starves" tumor cells of the nutrients and oxygen they need to continue to grow by blocking their access to these nutrients and oxygen.
