What is the Tegonat 20mg Capsule?

Tegafur 20mg capsule is an anticancer medicine combined by Tegafur, Gimeracil & Oteracil used to treat gastrointestinal cancers. It interferes with DNA and RNA synthesis in cancer cells to stop its growth & spread. .

Tegonat 20mg is a combination of three active components Tegafur 20 mg, Gimeracil 5.8 mg & Oteracil 15.8 mg. Tegafur gets converted inside the body into 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) which is an active anti-cancer substance helps to block the formation of DNA and RNA required for cancer cell growth and multiplication. Gimeracil helps prevent the breakdown of 5-FU to keep the drug active for longer time. Oteracil works to reduce the harmful effects of 5-FU on the stomach & intestines, which helps to decrease the gastrointestinal side effects. The combination of these medicines works to slow down & to stop the growth and spread of stomach cancer cells.

Tegonat 20mg Capsule is a combined (with Tegafur, Gimeracil, & Oteracil) chemotherapy for cancer treatment used to treat advanced stomach/gastric cancer. It must be taken exactly as per the prescription given by the oncologist. Patients with kidney, liver, blood, or breathing problems discuss with doctors before starting it.

What are the Uses of Tegonat 20mg Capsule?

  1. Tegonat 20mg Capsule is a triple acting combination medicine contains Tegafur, Gimeracil, & Oteracil prescribed for the treatment of stomach (gastric) cancer.

Colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer arises due to uncontrolled cell division in the colon and rectum of the gastrointestinal tract. For this, Tegonat 20 mg is administered in combination with other chemotherapy agents. It prevents the growth of the tumor, thus complementing the alternative therapy.

Gastric (stomach) cancer

Gastric cancer arises due to the uncontrolled cell division in the gastric lining of the stomach. It leads to symptoms like weight loss, abdominal pain, and indigestion. Tegonat 20 mg works by targeting the genetic material of the cancer cells and preventing them from proliferating any further.

Breast cancer

Breast cancer originates from the breast tissues and lymph nodes. These cancers are generally dependent on hormones for growth and can metastasize. For this. Tegonat 20 mg is administered as it slows down the progression of the disease and prevents breast cancer from spreading to the surrounding parts.

Head and neck cancers

This cancer consists of uncontrolled cell division in the cells of areas like the mouth, throat, or voice box. Teganot 20 mg is used in the treatment of these cancers, as they are sensitive to 5-FU–based chemotherapy agents. It reduces the rate of cell division of the cancer cells and makes them more susceptible to alternative therapies.

Pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer is one of the aggressive types of cancer that arises in the pancreas and is often detected at an advanced stage. Tegonat 20 mg is useful in the treatment of pancreatic cancer as it inhibits tumor cell division and prevents the disease from advancing any further.

How does Tegonat 20mg Capsule Work?

Tegonat (Tegafur) is an oral anticancer medication that is used to treat several types of solid tumors. It has a similar structure to other fluoropyrimidines but Tegonat 20 mg functions as a prodrug to form 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), one of the active antimetabolites in the fluoropyrimidine class.

Genetic mutations disrupt the cell’s DNA repair and cell cycle process. As a result, cancer cells proliferate rapidly and unregulated. Since the uncontrolled proliferation of cancer cells requires the constant creation of new DNA and RNA, this high level of proliferation relies heavily on the cancer cell's ability to synthesize new DNA and RNA.

When Tegonat 20 mg is taken orally, in the liver, it is slowly converted into 5-FU. 5-FU, as an active metabolite, serves as a substitute for uracil, a normal pyrimidine nucleotide involved in the formation of new RNA, allowing 5-FU to enter and become part of the biochemical pathways involved with producing nucleic acids. Once 5-FU enters the cell, it is then further metabolized into one or more active metabolites.

One of the primary ways 5-FU works is through the inhibition of thymidylate synthase, an enzyme needed for synthesizing thymidine, which is an important component of DNA. When thymidylate synthase is blocked by 5-FU, the cell cannot properly synthesize its DNA, leading to the formation of damaged DNA and ultimately cell death. The effect of 5-FU on rapidly dividing cancer cells is especially severe because of their high rate of proliferation.

Other metabolites of 5-FU are incorporated into RNA (instead of normal nucleotides) and disrupt RNA processing and protein synthesis, leading to reduced cancer cell survival. In this way, Tegonat 20 mg slows the growth of tumors, decreases the size of tumors, and assists in controlling the spread of cancer.
